Amersfoort

City in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands, 19 km/12 mi northeast of Utrecht; population (1997) 117,900. Industries include electrical engineering, car assembly, chemicals, and food processing.

The city's medieval buildings include the 14th-century Koppelpoort, a crenellated gateway with bridge and water-port.
