Ames

Town in Story County, central Iowa, USA; population (2000) 50,700. It is situated on the Squaw and Skunk rivers, 32 km/20 mi north of Des Moines. Iowa State University was founded here in 1858, and has dominated the local economy. It has around 25,000 students. The school's college of veterinary medicine is the country's oldest. Related facilities include the National Animal Disease Laboratory and the Institute for Atomic Research. Industries here produce equipment for water analysis and treatment. In the late 1990s, Ames was voted second of 190 small US cities in terms of quality of life.
