Ames, Jessie Daniel (1883-1972)

US suffragist and civil-rights activist. Ames brought the lynching to the attention of white women by linking feminism with racial injustice. From 1929 she was director of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation Women's Committee, and in 1930 she founded the Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching. She remained politically active until 1968.
