The Soviet Biosatellite Cosmos carried two monkeys, ten rats, and a number of plant specimens. Over 50 NASA-sponsored US scientists from the Ames Research Center and a number of universities participated in this cooperative effort, which was one of the 16 agreed projects under the US-Soviet Space Agreement signed in Moscow, Russia, in April 1987.

NASA space-research field centre at Moffett Field, California, for the study of aeronautics and life sciences. It was established in 1939 as the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, part of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and became part of NASA in 1958. Ames managed the Pioneer probe series, designed the Galileo probe, and is involved in the search for extraterrestrial life. Its passive dosimeter system (PDS) monitors radiation on the International Space Station. A research park houses facilities of collaborating universities.
