Amethyst Incident

UK–China episode arising 20 April 1949 when a British frigate, HMS Amethyst, sailing on the Chang Jiang (Yangtze) River, was fired at by communist Chinese forces. The ship was trapped for 14 weeks before breaking free and completing the journey to the sea. The temporary detention of this British vessel has been interpreted as an attempt by the Chinese to assert their sovereignty over what had been considered an international waterway.
