Amhara) Early medieval parchment with Ethiopian script. The Amharic script is an offshoot of the Ethiopic alphabet, itself a descendant of the South Semitic branch of languages, and the only South Semitic script still in use. An ethnic group comprising approximately 25% of the population of Ethiopia; 13 million (1987). The Amhara are traditionally farmers. They speak Amharic, a language of the Semitic branch of the Hamito-Semitic (Afro-Asiatic) family. Most are members of the Ethiopian Christian Church. |
