Amherst, Jeffrey (1717–1797)

British soldier who, as commander-in-chief of British forces in North America during the French and Indian War (the North American arm of the Seven Years' War) led his side to victory.

Amherst was born in Riverhead, Kent. Through the influence of the Duke of Dorset he became an ensign in the Guards. He was created Baron Amherst 1776 and promoted to field marshal 1796.
