Amherst, William Pitt (1773-1857)

British diplomat. He failed in an ambassadorial mission to China 1816 to procure better terms for commerce between Britain and China, by his refusal to defer to the Chinese emperor. He was governor general of India 1823-28 and was involved in the first Burmese war 1824-26 (see Myanmar).
