Amman, Johann Konrad (1663–1730)

Swiss physician who was an early authority on the teaching of the deaf and dumb. His book Surdus Loquens/The Talking Deaf Man 1692 laid the foundations for the modern oral method of teaching deaf children.

He was born in Schaffhausen and graduated at Basel 1687. His method of teaching was to attract the attention of his pupils to the motions of the lips and larynx, and then to urge them to imitate these movements.
