Amoco Cadiz

US-owned oil tanker that ran aground off the French coast in 1978, releasing 225,000 tonnes of crude oil. The environmental impact was immense - 30,000 seabirds died, 130 beaches were immersed in a 30 cm/12 in layer of oil, and 230,000 tonnes of crustacea and fish perished. See oil spill.

The occurrence of hydrocarbons and histopathological abnormalities in oysters for seven years following the wreck of the Amoco Cadiz in Brittany (France).
Their equipment has been utilized in clean-up activities in most of the world's oil spill disasters, including the explosion/fire at Shell's platform in the gulf of Mexico in 1971; the 1979 Amoco Cadiz tanker disaster, the 1986 Arco tanker disaster in Washington State and the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska to name but a few.
Major oil spills such as the Argo Merchant, the Amoco Cadiz, and the Exxon Valdez have received, by far, the most attention, but such spills account for only about 5% of oil entering the ocean (National Research Council 2002).
