Amoco Cadiz

US-owned oil tanker that ran aground off the French coast in 1978, releasing 225,000 tonnes of crude oil. The environmental impact was immense – 30,000 seabirds died, 130 beaches were immersed in a 30 cm/12 in layer of oil, and 230,000 tonnes of crustacea and fish perished. See oil spill.
