Amory

Town in Monroe County, northeast Mississippi, USA; population (1990) 7,100. It is located 31 km/19 mi southeast of Tupelo, near the east fork of the Tombigbee River. A railroad town founded in 1887 at the west edge of the Black Prairie, it is near the site of Cotton Gin Port (1816), on the Tombigbee. Since the opening of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in 1985, it has become a port itself. Timber and dairy products, in addition to cotton, are produced in the area, which also went through a brief 1920s natural gas boom.
