amphetaminePowerful synthetic stimulant. Benzedrine was the earliest amphetamine marketed, used as a ‘pep pill’ in World War II to help soldiers to overcome fatigue, and until the 1970s amphetamines were prescribed by doctors as an appetite suppressant for weight loss; as an antidepressant, to induce euphoria; and as a stimulant, to increase alertness. Indications for its use today are very restricted because of severe side effects, including addiction. It is a sulphate or phosphate form of C9H13N. How to thank TFD for its existence? The report cited substantial
seizures of fenetylline tablets in the Middle East, smuggling of
amphetimine and pemoline into West Africa, amphetamine abuse in
Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, and growing abuse of potent
"designer drugs" in Western Europe, North America and Asia. Cannabis continues to be the most widely abused drug; there has
been a resurgence of amphetamine abuse in some countries. Hospital admissions for amphetamine abuse rose slowly during the
1980s, declined in 1990 and 1991, and then surged by 1994, the latest
year for which complete data was available to the researchers. |
