Ampthill

Market town in Bedfordshire, England, 13 km/8 mi southwest of Bedford; population (2001) 6,900. Ampthill House was formerly the home of the Ampthill family. Nearby are the ruins of the 17th-century Houghton House, believed to be the original of the ‘House Beautiful’ in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.

Ampthill Church has a monument to Richard Nicholls, the first English governor of New York, which includes the cannonball supposed to have killed him.
