Ampurias

Ancient settlement in Spain, ruins of which still exist near Figueras. In the 6th century BC the Phocaeans (see Phocaea) transferred an island settlement to the mainland here and called it Emporeion. Later Julius Caesar founded a veterans' colony here named Emporiae; in Gothic times this was a bishopric.
