An Najaf

Walled city near the Euphrates in Iraq, 144 km/90 mi south of Baghdad; population (2001 est) 529,400. The tomb of Ali, son-in-law of Muhammad, is a Shiite Muslim shrine and a starting point of the route to Mecca.
