Anshan

City in Liaoning province, 89 km/55 mi southeast of Shenyang; population (2000) 1,389,700. The iron and steel centre started here in 1918 was expanded by the Japanese, dismantled by the Russians, and restored by the communist government of China. It produces some 8 million tonnes of steel annually. Other products include chemicals, tractors, and machinery.

Anshan was founded in 1387, fortified in the 16th century, and damaged extensively during the Boxer Rebellion (1900), the Russo-Chinese War (1904–05), and the Sino-Japanese War (1937–45).

To the east of the city is the Qianshan (Thousand Mountains) scenic area, designated a conservation site because of its magnificent forests and hills.
