Anacortes

Town in Skagit County, northwest Washington, USA; population (2000) 14,600. It is situated on Fidalgo Island in Puget Sound, 27 km/17 mi south-southwest of Bellingham. It serves as a deepwater shipping centre, and is a busy port of call. Its economy relies on lumbering, canning, oil refining, commercial fishing, shipbuilding, the manufacture of wood products and processed foods, and tourism.

Settled in the 1850s, Anacortes was unsuccessful at attracting railroads in the late 19th century, but nonetheless became a thriving city. Ferries leave here for Sidney in British Columbia and the San Juan Islands. There is also a bridge to Whidbey Island.
