Anacreon

Greek lyric poet. He lived in Abdera, Samos, and Athens, where he was favoured both before and after the institution of democracy. His love poetry, of great charm, was later widely imitated in verse known as the Anacreontics.

For being an idle boy lang syne; Who read Anacreon and drank wine, I early found Anacreon rhymes Were almost passionate sometimes-- And by strange alchemy of brain His pleasures always turned to pain-- His naiveté to wild desire-- His wit to love-his wine to fire-- And so, being young and dipt in folly, I fell in love with melancholy,
I studied Greek, and I learned so much of it as to read a chapter of the Testament, and an ode of Anacreon.
