Anadarko

Town and administrative headquarters of Caddo County, west-central Oklahoma, USA; population (2000) 6,650. It is situated on the Washita River, 80 km/50 mi southwest of Oklahoma City. Oil was discovered nearby in 1920, and the industry remains important. The town is a commercial centre for producers of cotton and cottonseed oil, peanuts, corn, livestock, poultry, and dairy goods. Light industries include rug manufacturing, and there is substantial tourism.

Anadarko was founded in 1901 on lands long-hunted by the Kiowa, Comanche, and Wichita peoples. The town has a large American Indian population and is the administrative headquarters of the Riverside Indian School and a Bureau of Indian Affairs Office that serves west Oklahoma and portions of Kansas. The American Indian Exposition is held here annually, and there are several museums and re-creations of tribal life.
