Ancaster

Village in Lincolnshire, England, 12 km/7 mi east of Grantham; population (2001) 1,300. Ancaster limestone is quarried in Ancaster and at nearby Wilsford. The Royal Air Force College at Cranwell, which was founded in 1920, lies 6 km/4 mi to the north.

During the Roman occupation, Ancaster, then known as Causennae, was the last Roman station before Lincoln; the camp itself covered an area of 3.5 ha/8.6 acres. Coins, pottery, and mosaic flooring from the site are displayed in Grantham Museum.

Ancaster

Town in Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Municipality, south Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 22,000. It is a largely residential suburb, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Hamilton.
