Andersonville

Small town in Sumter County, southwest Georgia, USA; population (1990) 300. It is situated 16 km/10 mi north-northeast of Americus, site (1863-65) of the Confederate prison Camp Sumter. Designed for 10,000, the camp housed as many as 33,000 men at once. Close to 14,000 died because of overcrowding, exposure, lack of food and medication, and unsanitary conditions. The camp's superintendent was hanged in November 1865. Andersonville National Historic Site includes a national cemetery, where 13,741 Union soldiers are buried, a museum, and several state monuments.
