Masséna, André (1758–1817)

Marshal of France. He served in the French Revolutionary Wars and under the emperor Napoleon was created marshal in 1804, duke of Rivoli in 1808, and prince of Essling in 1809. He was in command in Spain 1810–11 in the Peninsular War and was defeated by British troops under Wellington.
