André, John (1751–1780)| English soldier. He was adjutant general to the British forces during the American Revolution. In 1780 he was appointed to carry on negotiations with the American general Benedict Arnold, who offered to betray his command at the strategic West Point, New York State. André was captured by General George Washington's army and was tried and hanged as as spy. |
