Andre, Carl (1935– )| US minimalist sculptor. He is best known for his use of industrial materials. His Equivalent VIII (1976; Tate Gallery, London), in which 120 bricks are stacked in two layers to form a mathematically devised rectangle, caused an outcry because it seemed to mock the traditional values of creativity and workmanship in art. Andre also pioneered earthworks. |
| Other works include the outdoor installations Blocks and Stones (1973) for the Portland Center for the Visual Arts, Oregon, and Stone Field Sculpture (1977) in Hartford, Connecticut. |
