Andreae, Volkmar (1879–1962)

Swiss composer and conductor. He studied at Berne and Cologne. In 1900 he became assistant conductor at the Munich Opera, in 1902 choral conductor at Zurich and Winterthur, and later conductor of the Zurich symphony concerts. From 1914 to 1916 he lectured at Zurich University, and from 1914 to 1939 was director of the Zurich Conservatory.

Works

operas Ratcliff (based on Heine's tragedy, produced at Duisburg in 1914) and Abenteuer des Casanova (produced at Dresden in 1924); two symphonies; several concertos; choral works; chamber music.
