Davis, Andrew (1944– )

English conductor and keyboard player. He studied at Cambridge and in Rome and first came to public notice with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the Glagolitic Mass of Janáček. He was associate conductor with the Philharmonia in 1973, and led Capriccio at Glyndebourne the same year; he has since given Intermezzo and Schweigsame Frau there. He made his US debut in 1974, with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He was principal conductor with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1975, and worked with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as guest conductor 1974–76. He was principal conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1989, and musical director at Glyndebourne in 1989. He led the first UK performances of Tippett's The Mask of Time (1986) and New Year (1990), and has directed his own edition of The Art of Fugue from the harpsichord. He was awarded a CBE in 1991.
