Andrews, Frank (Maxwell) (1884–1943)

US soldier and aviator. After a distinguished military career, Andrews succeeded Dwight Eisenhower as head of US forces in Europe in 1943. As first commander of the US Army's General Headquarters Air Force (1935–39), he helped to develop the B-17 bomber. Andrews Air Base, near Washington DC, is named after him.
