Androcles

Traditionally, a Roman slave who fled from a cruel master into the African desert, where he encountered a crippled lion and withdrew a thorn from its paw. The lion later recognized the recaptured slave in the arena and spared his life. The emperor Tiberius was said to have freed them both.
