Androscoggin County

County in southwest Maine, USA; area 1,235 sq km/477 sq mi; population (1990) 105,300. Auburn is the county administrative headquarters. An agricultural, dairying, and industrial region, the county also includes the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn, which form Maine's historic textile-manufacturing, and one of the major US footwear-producing, centres. Other industries include paper and wood production, linoleum manufacture, corn and egg farming, and hydroelectric production from the Androscoggin and Little Androscoggin rivers.
