Wajda, Andrzej (1926– )

Polish film and theatre director. He was one of the most important figures in European cinema after World War II. His films have great intensity and are frequently concerned with the predicament and disillusion of individuals caught up in political events. They include Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Man of Marble (1977), Man of Iron (1981), Danton (1982), and Korczak (1990).

He was also mentor to film-maker Roman Polanski.

Later films include Nastasja (1994) and Pan Tadeusz (1999). He received an honorary Academy Award in 2000.
