Anegada

Island in the Greater Antilles in the West Indies, one of the British Virgin Islands; length 18 km/11 mi; width 5 km/3 mi; area 34 sq km/13 sq mi; population (1991) 164. Road Town (or Tortola) is the administrative centre for the island. Anegada is popular for its diving and bone-fishing. It is surrounded by coral reefs. In the west of the island are unspoilt beaches; in the east are swamps.

Unlike the other islands in the Virgin Islands group, which are of volcanic origin, Anegada comprises coralline limestone and calcareous sandstone. It rises out of the sea to a height of 10 m/33 ft and was originally part of an atoll.
