Anerio, Giovanni Francesco

Anerio, Giovanni Francesco (c. 1567–1630)

Italian composer, brother of Felice Anerio. He was maestro di cappella at the cathedral of Verona in 1609, and from 1613 to 1620 was music instructor at the Seminario Romano and maestro di cappella of the church of the Madonna de' Monti in Rome. He was in the service of Sigismund III of Poland 1624–28. His secular music, including madrigals and canzonettas, is more progressive than that of many of his contemporaries.
