Angels of Mons

Visions of St George accompanied by angels, mounted horsemen, medieval cavalry, and similar apparitions reportedly seen in the sky by British troops retreating after their defeat at the Battle of Mons in August 1914. The testimony of soldiers who took part in the retreat is generally ascribed to fatigue-induced hallucinations.

The story can be traced to a work of fiction by Arthur Machen, a journalist, published in the London Evening News at the time of the retreat.
