This flag is said to have arisen when an 18th-century Dutch book showed a red saltire (diagonal cross) on a white background and captioned it Ierse (‘Irish’). An English writer assumed it to be the flag of Jersey and labelled it thus in his book.

Largest of the Channel Islands; capital St Helier; area 117 sq km/45 sq mi; population (2001) 87,200. It is governed by a lieutenant governor, representing the English crown and an assembly. Jersey cattle were originally bred here. Jersey gave its name to a woollen garment

The island was occupied from 1940 until 1945 by German forces. Jersey zoo (founded in 1959 by Gerald Durrell) is engaged in breeding some of the world's endangered species.

Breed of small short-horned dairy cows originating in Jersey, Channel Islands, probably descended from French cattle. They are usually a shade of fawn or cream in colour, are adaptable to a wide range of conditions, and are found worldwide. Their milk is very rich in butterfat but they are not desirable producers of beef.
