he spoke not long after the conclusion of a violent guerrilla war waged
by the Irish Republican Army against British imperial rule in Ireland
and a subsequent civil war, fought between the newly formed army of the
Irish Free State and a breakaway wing of IRA irregulars, over the terms
of the peace treaty that concluded the Anglo-Irish War of 1919-21. It lasted until
1922, which saw the end of the Anglo-Irish War (page 15) and the
publication of Ulysses (page 576) by James Joyce (page 277). |
