Angra do Heroismo

Port in the Portuguese Azores, at the head of a deep bay on the southern shore of Terceira island; population (1991) 11,700. There is trade in agricultural produce, tobacco, wine, fruit, and embroidery. The town has a 16th-century cathedral and a 17th-century castle.

It was damaged by an earthquake in 1980, and the centre became a world heritage zone in 1983.
