Animals, The

English rock and rhythm-and-blues group 1960–66, reformed in 1976 and 1983. Their hard rock sound was influenced by blues and folk music. In 1964 their ‘House of the Rising Sun’ reached number one in the UK and USA and became a cult classic. Other hits include ‘I'm Crying’ (1964), ‘Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood’ (1965), and ‘We Gotta Get Out of this Place’ (1965).

The group's members were Eric Burdon (1941– ) (vocals and harmonica), Alan Price (1942– ) (vocals and keyboards), Bryan ‘Chas’ Chandler (1938–1996) (bass), Hilton Valentine (1943– ) (guitar), and John Steel (1941– ) (drums). They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
