The chinchilla's dense, soft fur enables it to survive at altitudes of around 3,000 m/10,000 ft in the Andes. It is this fur, however, that has caused the chinchilla to be hunted to such an extent that it is now rare and is protected in the wild.

South American rodent Chinchilla laniger found in high, rather barren areas of the Andes in Bolivia and Chile. About the size of a small rabbit, it has long ears and a long bushy tail, and shelters in rock crevices. These gregarious animals have thick, soft, silver-grey fur, and were hunted almost to extinction for it. They are now farmed and protected in the wild.
