Ann Arbor

City in Washtenaw County, southeast Michigan, USA; population (2000) 114,100. It is located 61 km/38 mi west of Detroit on the River Huron. Ann Arbor is situated in an agricultural and fruit-growing area, and is a centre for medical, aeronautical, nuclear, and chemical research, and for the manufacture of computer software and electronic equipment. Other local manufactures include ball bearings, coil springs, machinery, tools, cameras, and scientific instruments.

Ann Arbor was founded in 1824 and was incorporated as a city in 1851. It is the site of the University of Michigan (1837), and is also home to Washtenaw Community College (1965) and Concordia Lutheran College (1962). The city is surrounded by lakes and is a popular summer resort.
