Annapolis River

River in the west of the province of Nova Scotia. Flowing for some 120 km/75 mi into the tidal Annapolis Basin at Annapolis Royal (an inlet of the Bay of Fundy), its fertile valley is famous for growing apples.

The Annapolis River rises southwest of Kentville and flows in a generally southwesterly direction through an area of glacial lowland around Middleton and Bridgetown to the Annapolis Basin. The marshlands in its lower reaches are protected by dykes begun by French settlers in this region in the 17th century. One of the world's first tidal power generating stations (built 1984) is situated at Annapolis Royal. The basin extends southwest for 26 km/16 mi to Digby, and connects with the Bay of Fundy via the narrow, cliff-lined Digby Gut.
