Annapolis Royal

Town in west Nova Scotia, Canada, on the Bay of Fundy; population (1991) 650. Annapolis Royal was founded by the French in 1605 under the name of Port Royal, the oldest French settlement in Canada. It was ceded to Britain in 1713, and was given the name Annapolis Royal after Queen Anne of England (ruled 1702–14). It was the capital of Nova Scotia until 1750.

Fort Anne is now a historical monument. The tidal power station, opened 1985, was the first of its kind in North America. It utilizes hydroenergy released by the tidal rise, which is the highest in the world.

Annapolis Valley, which stretches northeast from Annapolis Royal to Windsor, produces orchard fruits, tobacco, and dairy herds.
