electrodeAny terminal by which an electric current passes in or out of a conducting substance; for example, the anode or cathode in an electrolytic cell. The anode is the positive electrode and the cathode is the negative electrode. The terminals that emit and collect the flow of electrons in thermionic valves (electron tubes) are also called electrodes: for example, cathodes, plates (anodes), and grids. Further, experimental MFCs, now smaller than a beer mug, would need to be as big as a mansion (in large part to compensate for the low power density), undoubtedly greatly increasing the distance between anode and cathode. Batteries convert chemical energy into electrical energy through reactions at the anode and cathode. [8,13,14] During iontophoresis, as a result of ionic exchange between the electrode and the body fluids, oxidation and reduction reactions take place at the anode and cathode, respectively. |
