Ansbach

City in Bavaria, Germany, 150 km/93 mi northwest of Munich, on the River Rezat; population (1995) 39,600. Important industries include plastics processing, food, and electro-technology, although the majority of inhabitants work in the service sector.

Ansbach was the seat of the margraves 1460–1791, and belonged to Prussia 1791–1806.

Architectural monuments include the 15th-century Church of the Holy Cross, the churches of St Johannis and St Gumbertusand, the Hofkanzlei square, and examples of baroque architecture, including the 18th-century palace of the margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach.

A Bach Festival is held each July–August.
