Anschluss

The annexation of Austria with Germany, accomplished by the German chancellor Adolf Hitler on 12 March 1938.

Austria was occupied jointly by the Allies until 1955, when it declared independence as a republic.

2008 marks the 70th anniversary of the Anschluss, or annexation of Austria and the von Trapps' departure for the United States, where they would ultimately settle down in Vermont.
Das Buch mit Sieben Siegeln, The Book with Seven Seals, is generally regarded as Franz Schmidt's masterpiece, even though its reputation has always suffered from the timing of its premiere in the Musikverein in Vienna, which took place just three months after the 1938 Anschluss, an event that Schmidt had welcomed enthusiastically.
In 1918 a tragedy began which met its consummation in the Anschluss.
