AntananarivoCapital and administrative centre of Madagascar, on the interior plateau at a height of 1,250 m/4,100 ft, with a rail link to Toamasina (Tamatave), the chief port of the island; population (2001 est) 1,403,400. Industries include food processing, leather goods, clothing, wood pulp and paper manufacturing, and brewing.
