In US usage, an adjective referring to the period just before the Civil War (1861-65).

The term ‘prewar’ is used when describing the period before any other war.

With its Greek columns, antebellum architecture, admission policies accentuating racial and class exclusion, and a reputation as the incubator of the state's conservative leaders, the institution prided itself as a bastion of aristocratic privilege.
There are other painters, musicians, opera singers, craftsmen and writers living in the town, which also has the distinction of having the largest preserve of antebellum architecture in the United States.
