Anthon, Charles (1797–1867)

US classicist. Anthon was admitted to the bar in 1919 and made a Professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia University the next year. He was the first American to prepare critical editions of classical authors, and he compiled the first edition of Lemprierè's Classical Dictionary. His contribution to this classic lexicon was recognized in its third edition, which was called Anthon's Classical Dictionary.
