Large primitive piglike mammals, fossils of which are common in the middle Tertiary rocks of Europe and Asia. Anthracotherium was a typical member.

These dispersions may have been preceded by an earlier movement of Brachyodus onoideus, a member of the Anthracotheriidae, a now extinct family of hippo-like suiforms, and perhaps by a member of the primate family Pliopithecidae (Thomas 1984; Tchernov 1992b).
