American Legion

Community organization in the USA, originally for ex-servicemen of World War I, founded 1919. It has approximately 2.9 million members, and has admitted veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Veterans of more recent wars are also eligible to join.

It was organized in Paris in 1919 at a meeting of representatives of all the divisions then in France and by the end of the year over a million members had enrolled, with no distinction made between officers and enlisted men. The organization has a strong national voice on issues concerning US veterans, and sponsors local welfare programs and essay contests.
