tank destroyer

Self-propelled anti-tank gun developed during World War II; they fell out of use in post-war years when tanks were designed to mount more powerful guns. They generally resembled a tank but usually with a fixed superstructure so that a much heavier gun could be mounted than a tank of similar size.

Tank destroyers proved highly effective in ambushes, and to allow guns to be moved rapidly or to stalk tanks.

The US policy was to use an open-topped turret, allowing a more powerful gun to be fitted.
